Tips for Eating Healthy on Vacation

We all know how it is, picky toddlers and healthy eating on vacation don’t match! However, with healthy snacks, healthy fast food options, portion control and responsibility, it is possible.

We eat well in the lead up to our vacation and then once we’re by the pool it’s burgers and fries, sweets and ice cream. As you can tell by the looks on their faces - they don’t want mom to order the salad!

When on vacation like we were here at The Parker Palm Springs it’s important to still try and stick to a healthy and nutritious diet for you and your family. Drawing from my last post on healthy eating, here are a couple of other tips I always turn to when travelling with toddlers 2-5 years old!

Healthy Portable Snacks to keep poolside

  • Fresh fruit or apple sauce

  • Chopped veggies like carrot sticks or bell peppers and hummus

  • Cheese with wholegrain or rice crackers

  • Tofu cubes

  • Hard boiled eggs

  • Dry toast with nut butter to dip

Portion Control

  • Try splitting larger dishes between your kids or even getting sharing platters for the family.

  • Supervise meal times to ensure there is no binge eating.

have set food times

  • With so much running and playing on vacation, eating on the go can be a choking hazard.

  • A child who is choking may not be able to make any sound or speak, so always supervise food times on vacation especially.

  • Try and keep your mealtimes to after swimming to avoid your kids feeling nauseous.

the division of responsibility for toddlers through adolescents

The parent is responsible for what, when and where. The child is responsible for how much and whether.

Fundamental to parent’s jobs is trusting children to determine how much and whether to eat from what parent’s provide. When parents do their jobs with feeding, children do their jobs with eating.

In closing, don’t worry - kids will always eat when they need to eat. The key here is to ensuring they are eating the right things. Of course, a treat ice-cream once a day when on vacation won’t hurt, but it’s so easy to rely on fast food over summer and it's in their best interest to keep them as healthy as possible!
