Building our Custom Family Photo Album with Mixbook

If you know me, you know I love taking photos, take it from someone who has 100,000+ photos on their phone, did I just admit that in public?! 🙈 But you might be surprised to know I’m seriously lacking in the family photo album department, or at least I was… until Mixbook.

My inspiration for the bright colors was Aura, whose name means light. Mixbook have literally hundreds of design options, but for me the rainbow theme was a sure thing!

Our favorite thing to do is travel as a family, go out on the boat, celebrate (and get a little extra about) birthdays, outdoor sports and nature adventures so these were the page titles I chose. What I really loved about the process is you can really customize it to exactly how your family spends time, with so many layout and design options I really feel like there is something for everyone!

During lockdown quarantine we are all missing our families. Birthdays and holidays (much like Father’s Day coming up real soon) are even harder. I think this makes an incredible gift idea for those occasions where we can’t spread love in person right now, we can send the gift of memories to those we cherish.

Having family in New York, Oregon and Romania makes it extra special to send them a book they can keep and look at when we chat about all our crazy adventures, we did have to edit out some of the photos from our family vacations though 🥴 ha!

First step

  • Grab a drink of choice (or two!)

  • Prepare yourself to be overwhelmed at first with all the options

  • Pick your album design

Next step

  • Make folders of your photos on your phone (Easter, Christmas, Trips, Family days…) psst I say this, but then have I even done this? Nope! 🙈 (note to self to start NOW and organise my monumental camera roll!

  • Download the Mixbook App

  • Scan the barcode on your computer screen and upload your favorite photos from your phone

  • Select a few photos per page (you can add up to 10 per page - I’d suggest mixing it up, have some super minimal and others more scrap-book like to keep it interesting)

  • Pick out the cute stickers to decorate your pages (bonus points if you keep them on theme for the pages!)

  • Select a font style, size & color, keep it in line with your theme - you’ll see mine’s bright a whimsical!

  • PRO TIP: Save often and look at it again the next day before ordering

  • Upon ordering you can select a landscape, portrait or square book. I chose the square in 10” x 10” with the extra thick card stock pages so they’re safe from chubby toddler hands!

It could even be a fun idea to make a shelter-at-home Mixbook, documenting how you and your family have navigated this weird time! Our kids will be learning about this in history class someday, what a great way to preserve such a unique period in our lives!

Let me tip you into a Designers secret…

For the theme of your book, pick what photo you want for the cover and then pick your overall album design based on the colours and setting in the cover photo!

There are so many reasons to have these keepsakes storing our memories…

I remember my parents always had albums upon albums and we’d all look through them every holiday at family gatherings. Nowadays, everything is on Facebook and we just don’t look back on our memories like we used to. I want to give my kids something they can cherish when they (and we!) are older.

Pro tip: Have your favorite beverage at hand and lots of snacks - this isn’t a quick process!

I know it’s overwhelming when taking on a photo album projects, but if I can manage it with a glass or two at midnight, anyone can!
