Wall Murals by Minted in Aura's Kid’s Bedroom Renovation

Internet… meet Moo Cow!

Looking for bedroom inspo? I was so excited to partner with Minted to add the perfect wall decor to Aura’s bedroom home decor. See my posts from past years about decorating Aura’s Nursery, Tudor’s Nursery and our Boston Condo!

Forget boring paint and wallpaper, I find the wall-sized murals way more fun and the kids love looking at all the art they could have on their walls! I love that all of their designs are created by independent artists. They cut out the middle man and connect you right to the source of the creativity. There is so much variety to choose from!

Being a Professional Interior Designer, a member of A.S.I.D. and furniture designer having worked for Pottery Barn and McGuire, I hope you love the murals I’ve incorporated in to the kids’ spaces as this sort of project is where I thrive! It was so fun to get creative and mix’n’match (look out for upcoming posts on each of their room renovations to get all the details).

Aura loves her ‘Moo Cow’ otherwise known as Wee Staredown and she says goodnight to her every night before bed! It’s so adorable. I love that the art brings life in to the room and it really feeds the kids’ creativity as they imagine up stories of themselves playing with Moo Cow. We sit on her bed and think up fun stories of what Moo Cow got up to that day while Aura was at ballet.

Minted’s community of independent artists and designers are located in all 50 states and over 100 countries. They are illustrators and textile designers, painters and packaging designers, marketers and stay-at-home moms. Some have design degrees, and others are participating in Minted competitions to learn design for the first time. They share a deep love for creative expression, personal development, risk-taking, and most importantly, paying it forward by helping each other.

The Installation

Tools you’ll need:

  • Tape measure

  • Step ladder

  • Razor / utility blade

  • Smoothing tool (a credit card works!)

  • A helping hand, if needed

  • My own top tip: grab a 36” metal ruler to trim your mural*
*they come in a variety of ceiling heights and widths and I needed to trim mine 8” pre-installation as my ceiling was lower – the metal ruler really helped that process

My Tips to a Successful Installation

  • Dust the corners of the room with a duster and wipe down the walls with a damp sponge

  • Remove the outlet covers*
*I’m actually leaving the poster over her outlet cover

  • Measure your space and cut as needed as mentioned above but be sure to leave a little bit extra so you can exacto knife at the baseboard.

  • Draw a pencil line at the center point of your room

  • I laid out all the mural sheets in order on our king bed so Moo Cow didn’t end up looking like she’d had a horrible accident!

  • I had my husband help me starting from the right corner. It turned out we had 12” excess, so we started 6” in.

  • Start from the top and work your way down removing the backing 2-3’ at a time using your hands pushing from the centers outwards to get rid of bubbles (don’t worry about getting it bubble free at this stage)

  • If you have a textured wall like I do, I wouldn’t advise using a credit card to smooth as it would catch on the texture underneath and tear. Using your hands works well enough!

  • Don’t worry if it sticks onto itself as you can separate it without damaging anything.

  • For each further panel, just line it up at the top next to the one you just did. Try and find something you can use as a visual guide to line it up as best you can.

  • And if it’s not perfect…. Nobody stands that close to notice anyway (sorry about your bad hair day, Moo Cow!)

Putting up the mural is so easy! They really make it amateur friendly – although don’t hide your exacto-knife too well like I did and end up searching the house for it for 2 hours before heading to Home Depot for a new one.

The Murals by Minted are also renter friendly as they peel off without damaging your paintwork - a great hack if you’re in rented accomodation but want to add a touch of your own personal style!

Did you know, Minted do all kinds of art, homeware and stationary with all the beautiful designs! With Valentines Day coming up I’d highly recommend checking out their selection of super sweet Valentine’s cards!

Keep your eyes peeled in the next couple of weeks for a deep dive look in to the renovation of both Aura and Tudor’s bedrooms! I’m really excited to show you the transformations courtesy of an amazing family friendly brand I partnered with!

Love, Lynn
